Late Wednesday afternoon ESPN’s Marc Stein reported that the Sacramento Kings are in discussion to signing Sim Bhullar to a 10-day contract later this week. Bhullar will take over a roster spot on the Kings when David Wear’s current 10-day contract expires.

Not only will Bhullar become another Canadian on an NBA roster, but historically he’ll be the first NBA player of Indian descent. The 7-5 center went undrafted out of New Mexico State where he played 65-games over the span of two seasons. In his college career Bhullar averaged 10.2-points, 7.2-rebounds and 2.9-rebounds, however, his conditioning was always in question.

The Toronto, Ontario native went undrafted in the 2015 NBA draft, although, the Kings were always a team interested in giving the big man a chance. He was on the Kings Summer League roster, in which he participated in a total of four games. He was also invited to the Kings training camp, participating in two games before getting cut.

Bhullar proceeded to sign with the Reno Bighorns, the NBA Development League affiliate for Sacramento. It is reported that the 22-year old weighed more than 400 pounds during summer league last July, but hard work has paid off, as he has lost more than 30 pounds since.

In his first few games with the Bighorn, Bhullar was seeing close to 20-minutes a game. Since then his minutes have risen to the high-30s and on some nights he hits the 40-minute mark. In his 38-games with the Bighorns, Bhullar has averaged 10.3-points, 8.8-rebounds and 3.9-blocks. Bhullar has also had 10 double-doubles for the Bighorns and one triple-double when he scored 26-points, grabbed 17-rebounds and blocked 11-shots on February 22. He’s come three blocks shy of adding four more triple-doubles this season.

Bhullar has received a lot of support from the Kings Management and ownership. None more than the team owner Vivek Ranadive, a businssman who grew up in India and purchased the Kings a couple years ago. Ranadive is someone who wants to see Bhullar in the NBA as the first player of Indian descent.

With the season coming to a close and the Kings chances of the playoffs gone it has become an open tryout for many of the young D-Leaguers. Not just on the Kings but across the NBA. Guys like Wear and David Stockton have received 10-day contracts from the Kings and Bhullar will join them as another call-up. However, Bhullar’s signing will add a little historical flavor to it.
