Former Illinois State and Canadian Junior Men’s National Team guard Kaza Keane is taking his talents to Ohio. Keane will join Cleaveland State University as a late transfer as first reported by Hoops Hype Canada Wednesday.

Keane gives the Vikings a player with two years of backcourt experience from an elite mid-major conference (Missouri Valley) to join senior Charlie Lee, junior Trey Lewis and sophomore transfer (Creighton) Andre Yates, who will be eligible this season.

The Vikings, who are the anticipated preseason favorite in the Horizon League, are expected to appeal to the NCAA for Keane, a 6-0 junior, to be eligible immediately.

Keane has ties to CSU. Keane’s sister, Takima, played basketball at Cleveland State from 2008-12, while another sister, Kalisha, played at Michigan State from 2007-11, earning Big 10 Player of the Year and All-America honors as a senior. Keane gets the scholarship made available last spring with the transfer of Bryn Forbes to Michigan State.

“I believe we have added a solid combo-guard who can shoot from the perimeter, defend and also distribute the ball,” head coach Gary Waters said in a release. “Kaza will bring experience to a team that lost three experienced players and we expect him to contribute as soon as he is eligible to play.”

In two seasons at Illinois State, Keane appeared in 65 games, making 10 starts as a freshman in 2012-13. As a freshman, Keane averaged 2.7 points and 2.1 rebounds, while leading the team with 3.2 assists. Keane, who enrolled at CSU last Friday, handed out 99 assists, while committing just 58 turnovers at ISU.

Keane was also a member of the Junior Men’s National Team that represented Canada at the 2013 U19 World Championships. Keane donning the red and white flirted with a triple-double in a game versus Iran after a 25 minutes played, 9 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assist performance.

He was previously linked with National Champions in Canada Carleton University and also turned down an offer from Canisius according to NCAA analyst Mark Bairos,

“I like Keane, I think he has tons of potential. Clearly was a top talent out of high school from Canada. In my opinion just needed a place where he can play with some confidence and shooting. Illinois State gave him opportunities on the floor to gain confidence early last season, when it didn’t produce results those opportunities dwindled and his confidence was lost. He should benefit from a fresh start.” Bairos shared with Hoops Hype Canada.
