Over the last few weeks, word has quickly spread to college basketball coaches about a 6-foot-7, 185-pound 2016 point guard from Vancouver, British Columbia named Jermaine Haley.
The son of a former NFL player – Jermaine, Sr. played for the Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins – and grandson of a world class high jumper, the youngest Haley played for Burnaby (Canada) South last season, but is expected to enroll at Canarias (Spain) Basketball Academy for his junior year.
According to Haley’s AAU coach with DRIVE Basketball, Pasha Bains, the sophomore is a legitimate point guard despite his 6-foot-7 height.
“I think he can play anywhere from the one through three but his natural position is point guard,” Bains said. “He’s a passer and similar to Kyle Anderson, although he’s pretty athletic.
“He’s a 6-foot-7 point guard and playmaker. He does a lot of stuff off the dribble but his special trait is his passing. He’s a good scorer, he shoots it well, is a good athlete and can guard the one through three.”
As coaches have seen Haley in person and on tape – and maybe watched one of his mixtapes – they’ve been quick to offer him scholarships.
“Memphis and Wake Forest offered yesterday, Washington State and Arizona State offered this week, Gonzaga is trying to get him on campus for a visit and are very serious, Washington is recruiting him and Boise State, Santa Clara and Utah have offered,” said Bains.
Western schools could have an edge in Haley’s recruitment, although it’s not a lock that he stays in the region for college.
“Like any kid, he dreams of playing in the big conferences but he talks a lot about the Pac-12 and West Coast schools. I think he’s a fan of those schools,” said Bain.
“We would love for him to stay around here but it doesn’t really matter; he’ll do what’s best for him and choose wherever will help him best in getting to the next level.”
