There have been multiple rumours leading up to the draft headlining a potential Steve Nash trade. The consensus seems to be that the deal taking place would be Steve Nash and the 7th Overall Pick in 2014 (Lakers) for Michael Carter-Williams and Thaddeus Young in a Los Angeles to Philadelphia exchange. Another long-lasting rumour, that never seems to die, is Nash to Toronto. The theory behind Nash returning to Canada is that the Raptors point guard, Kyle Lowry, could be heading out the door and Nash could provide some depth at the position while also mentoring a potential Canadian guard, Tyler Ennis, that the Raptors might be looking to draft. Neither of these scenarios may present as likely, or in the Raptors case perhaps not possible (CBA salary trade restrictions), but nonetheless both are interesting. Here’s a quick glance at the possible Lakers-76ers trade surrounding Nash which is the most likely trade destination if he were to get traded.

Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Michael Carter-Williams, Thaddeus Young, and the 54th Overall Pick in 2014

Philadelphia 76ers Receive: Steve Nash, Robert Sacre, and the 7th Overall Pick in 2014

Why Los Angeles does this trade

Doing this trade can help LA get back into the playoffs as soon as next year as MCW and Thaddeus Young should serve as great pieces to fill in around Kobe Bryant. The trade also alleviates the Lakers of their obligation to Steve Nash’s contract for next season and gives them the opportunity to use that money in free agency in an attempt to attract another star.

Why Philadelphia does this trade

The 76ers love this 2014 draft class, especially the lottery portion of it. Acquiring the 7th pick in the draft gives Philly 3 of the top 10 picks and a great opportunity to move up to number 1 and draft Wiggins. If they don’t decide to move up it allows them to potentially select Dante Exum and two other great prospects. While this trade might be all about the draft for the 76ers, receiving Nash and Sacre could also serve them very well. Nash is a much needed veteran for this youth laden roster and Sacre can serve as some front court depth being Nerlens Noel at the center spot.

Who Wins?

Nobody wins. Either team could eventually end up coming out of this deal on top, but as of now, there is no winner. Whenever draft picks and young players such as MCW are dealt it is impossible to identify a clear winner of a trade because of how unclear their future is.

And Nash?

This trade would spell the end of his career. If this trade were completed, Nash would likely spend the last year on his contract serving as a mentor to prospects in Philadelphia. Another route that he could potentially take is to retire after a Hall of Fame worthy career.
